I had a simple insight while relaxing after dinner recently. As I played with two halves of a nut, it dawned on me - Purusha and Prakriti, consciousness and nature, are deeply intertwined. One cannot exist without the other. If Purusha comes before Prakriti, and Prakriti is contained within Purusha, then darkness precedes and comes next to light, and is contained within it. Death precedes and comes next to life, and is contained within it. The beginning and end of all things are within us. Purusha and Prakriti are like two boxes, one inside the other. Neither the inner nor the outer box can exist alone. They depend on each other.
The source and end of everything lies in this eternal partnership of Purusha and Prakriti. Purusha is the unchanging witness, the seer that observes all. Prakriti is the outer world in constant motion that Purusha perceives - the body, mind, senses, thoughts, and nature. Prakriti acts and evolves, and Purusha watches silently. But they cannot be separated. This simple insight gave me a glimpse into the profound philosophy of Samkhya. Our consciousness and the world we inhabit are deeply connected. Purusha and Prakriti, spirit and matter, witness and experience, live together in an inseparable partnership. One cannot be without the other. The beginning and end of all things rest in this union. This was a quiet reminder for me to not see myself as separate from the world I live in. My inner and outer worlds meet within me, at every moment. I found deep comfort in this thought. I hope this simple reflection provides the same comfort to you. We are like bread that grows with yeast but also falls asleep with the same yeast that is inseparable.
