Today, 1 August 2024, I celebrate 14 months since the publication of my novella "Shankara's Bhaja Govindam: Chronicle of an Abduction in Varanasi". This journey began on 13 June 2023, when I brought to life a story long close to my heart.
Over these 14 months, the work has flourished beyond expectation. The book has generated interest surpassing initial projections, fostering lively dialogue among readers from diverse backgrounds. It has kindled a flame, illuminating minds and hearts as people explore Advaita Vedanta philosophy through the narrative.
Transformative experience
Writing "Shankara's Bhaja Govindam" was a transformative experience. It required immersion in Shankara's teachings and the context of ancient India, undertaken with humility and dedication. The aim was to distil complex philosophical concepts into a compelling story that resonates with readers' innermost selves.
The protagonist Raghav, grappling with doubts and earthly desires, has emerged as a universal archetype. Many readers see their inner struggles reflected in his journey. Through this character, the narrative strives to honour Shankara's legacy, making his ideas on non-duality and the illusion of separateness more accessible.
The book's reception, particularly on Learn Vedanta Substack, has been a source of inspiration. It serves as a bridge between different cultures and disciplines, encouraging dialogue and mutual understanding.
Hindi
A Hindi version of the book has been proposed to a major publishing house, with a response pending. This development could significantly expand the reach of Shankara's message within its original cultural context.
This offering aims to share the work with a broader audience, potentially inspiring reflection and inner growth.
Readers are invited to engage with the novella, reflect on its teachings, and share their experiences and thoughts. This collective engagement can nurture the flame of knowledge and inner growth, illuminating the path to self-realisation.
Ahead
Looking ahead, there are numerous possibilities to explore. These 14 months mark the beginning of a longer journey. There are more stories to tell and more bridges to build between ancient wisdom and the modern world. Readers are encouraged to stay connected, follow future developments, and participate in this ongoing adventure of discovery and sharing.
