I write to spark the imagination. The human brain cannot always distinguish reality from illusion - it experiences both in the same way. When we read stories or hear tales, our mind animates the details. We see vivid scenes unfold, hear the voices speak, and feel the emotions of the characters. For a moment, we inhabit another world. Though the experience only exists in our mind, it produces real effects. Our heart rate increases, cortisol rises, and pupils dilate - our body reacts as if the events are happening in the present moment.
The Nucleus Accumbens, the region of the brain involved in pleasure, reward, and motivation, activates. It does not differentiate reality from illusion and is instrumental in producing immersive experiences. The areas of the brain involved in self-reflection and judgment deactivate. We are transported. This is the power of narrative. It inspires empathy and illuminates what it means to be human. By crafting stories, I aim to spark insight and wonder in readers. My role is to provide the canvas, the primer for imagination. The reader animates the tale and makes it their own. Together, we embark on a journey that transforms us both.
Writing is a vocation and privilege. Stories shape society and capture human existence. They endure across generations, cultures, and media. By partaking in this tradition, I become a conduit for humanity's impulse to share tales. The storyteller's job is reviving ancient wonder—lighting the Nucleus Accumbens, awakening imagination, and suspending judgment. This is why I write: to spark a vision that inspires, illuminates, and endures. To glimpse life's beauty and mystery. And to embark on adventures that transform us all. Writing, reading, understanding, and reflecting is a way to feel alive, escaping the trap of immobility that Julio Cortázar identified in his short story “Axolotl”.
