Dear Friends,
Let us reflect upon ancient teaching from the Mundaka Upanishad, which poetically praises enlightened souls abiding in unity with the Sacred:
“No more questions have they to ask of life. With self-will extinguished, they are at peace...They have attained the summit of wisdom by the steep path of renunciation. They have attained to immortality and are united with the Lord of Love.”
Now, these lines, translated in English by Eknath Easwaran, describe rare saintly beings established in full awakening. But what relevance could they offer regular folk like us navigating everyday lives? Well, this same passage also hints that the work of even ordinary good-hearted people can propagate elevating ripples long after death:
“When they leave the body, the vital force returns to the cosmic womb, but their work becomes a beneficial force in life to bring others together in the Self.”
Let’s ponder this together. Can the lasting effects of someone’s modest kindness or service compare to the works of great spiritual masters? I propose that through the natural interconnection of all life, even simple virtuous deeds done with sincerity echo on, uplifting others across time.
Imagine a struggling teenager who finds hope thanks to your compassion, which kindles their confidence and moral strength to contribute similarly to themselves someday. Or picture volunteers at a nursing home whose dedication so moves a young nurse that it inspires their career caring for the marginalized. One’s humble generosity can plant seeds sprouting goods and fruits for years without expectation of reward or credit.
Does not this extraordinary fractal-like echoing of basic human goodness through modest deeds seem miraculous? A splendid organic geometry links conscious choices we make day-to-day to awakening cascading down through coming generations. By serving the innate nobility within all people, our beneficial influence flows on long after we’re personally gone from this world.

Understanding this truth can profoundly change how we approach death. Imagine realizing one’s unique influence reassuringly carries on propagating in others’ lives even once our body is shed. Our culture conditions us to equate worth with fame, wealth and worldly success - all wiped out by death. But the Upanishads reveal our true legacy through the enduring imprint our consciousness leaves upon those whose lives we touch.
My friends, take heart that the spark of love you awaken through spiritual practice, community service or simply being present for others can never be extinguished! Its ripening may manifest long beyond our lifespans, but that need not dampen enthusiasm for planting seeds. We need not personally witness all the fruits to trust in life’s unfolding.
This empowers us to carry on our shared work wholeheartedly without craving immediate outcomes. We can find fulfilment in uplifting those around us through small acts of care, wisdom and conscience. When we act with sincere goodwill, our influence harmonizes with a vaster momentum of awakening moving through the ages. And in times when our efforts seem ineffective, we remember genuine compassion is never wasted but bears fruit eventually in unseen fields.
What do you think, my friends –might a teaching initially aimed at saints offer ordinary people like us solace about death while inspiring more loving service now? Can you imagine your relationships, efforts, and creativity propagating beneficially onward even after you die? What implications might such a perspective have for the choices we make each day? How might remembering our interconnectedness change how we meet life’s joys and difficulties?
Even if sometimes you feel your role insignificant, remember that every wholesome deed sends out ripples merging with a larger current carrying all beings gradually toward awakening.
