The truth, or Satya, in Vedanta philosophy, is not something relative or subjective but corresponds to the ultimate essence of reality, that is Brahman. Brahman is described in the Upanishads as the indivisible base that lies at the root of the entire universe, the definitive Reality from which everything comes.

And Satya is nothing but the unveiling of this ultimate Reality; it is the true knowledge that lifts the veil of ignorance, gives us a glimpse of Brahman, allowing us to transcend the apparent multiplicity of the phenomenal world. Satya as an expression of the divine is endowed with an infinite ontological weight, capable of curving the very essence of space-time back toward the infinite perfection from which it arose. Space and time emerge from Brahman, have their being saturated in Brahman, and finally melt back into Brahman, the eternal nondual ground of being. Hence satya contains the power to unveil the underlying timeless Reality.

Glimpsing, even for just an instant, this Satya means recognizing the divine vein that runs through everything and understanding the essential unity of all creation. It means realizing, in a mystical and lightning-fast insight, the single and eternal source from which all ephemeral forms emerge and to which they finally return in the cyclical becoming of the world.

This is why the truth, Satya, has the power to completely transform us: it realigns us instantly to the fundamental harmony of Being and reconnects us to our most intimate nature which is, ultimately, identical to that of Brahman.

Glimpsing this truth is equivalent to a radical change in perspective, capable of transfiguring the world of names and forms in which we are immersed. Suddenly everything appears insubstantial, veiled in māyā, a simple shadowy play of that Self which is reflected in us, in others and every part of the manifestation.

But why can we speak of the “weight” of truth, of its ability to curve space-time? Because satya carries with it, in an instant, the weight of the centuries; it condenses in an illumination all the gravity of time, crushing past, present and future into the here and now of that insight.

In the moment we see Reality, the categories of before and after, subject and object cease; all dualisms dissolve and with them, the entire manifested universe becomes pure spirit again, the light of uncontaminated consciousness.

It is as if all the density of samsara, the entire weight of conditioned existence, was sucked in and dragged towards that single point of pure awareness in which we identify with Brahman. This is why we can say that Satya curves space and time.

The ancient Vedantic intuition of the creative power of Brahman, understood as the Primordial Consciousness from which the entire manifestation emanates seems to find parallels in the latest discoveries of physics. Perhaps, contemplating absolute truth, our abiding in pure consciousness does help shape the space-time we live in.

In this sense, Satya is much more than a simple correspondence to empirical reality: it encompasses past, present and future, and binds the phenomenal world to the absolute that permeates its being. Sundaram, the uncontaminated beauty of the True, the dazzling splendour of Brahman.

This is why glimpsing the truth, according to the Vedantic tradition, has the taste of eternity. Beyond Satya, there is nothing to seek and nothing to find. There space-time curves upon itself, the entire universe dances around the fire of that center of pure consciousness which we, after all, are.

Tat Tvam Asi - That thou art. The truth is to discover within us the very essence of Brahman. There lies the only, authentic liberation.

Perhaps, then, it would be more correct to say that, contemplating the truth, our consciousness expands into Brahman's truth, rather than “understanding” or “conceiving” it in a strict sense. Conceive: This word comes from the Latin verb concipere, which means “to take in and hold; become pregnant”. This verb is composed of the prefix con-, which may indicate “completely” or “with”, and the verb capere, which means “to grasp, seize”. The verb capere is derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *kap-, which means “to grasp”. This root is also present in many other words in English and other languages that have to do with the idea of grasping or taking something or someone

Brahman infinitely transcends the scope of our conditioned mind; It is inconceivable, ungraspable, and impossible to encapsulate and trap in a concept. Brahman is the Absolute that precedes any subject-object dualism.

Therefore, I have come up with a sentence that I hope manages to convey what I mean:

Our consciousness expands into Brahman’s truth.

asmākaṃ caitanyaṃ brahma-satyāyāṃ vikasati

It is Brahman who, through grace, absorbs us into Himself, dissipating any illusion of separation. It is our consciousness - that divine spark which is one with the infinite ocean of sat-chit-ānanda - that finally awakens to its true Self and remembers its total identity with ultimate Reality.

Contemplating the truth ultimately means letting go of any cognitive claim and surrendering with total trust to that unfathomable yet incredibly intimate mystery that we call Brahman.
